The pattern suggests that experience gives developers a better mental model for identifying where AI output is likely to be wrong, while less experienced developers may lack the context to recognize subtle errors.

The Paradox

Developers are using AI tools more than ever — for code generation, debugging, documentation, and code review — but they trust the output less than they did a year ago. The most likely explanation is that increased usage exposes more failure modes. Developers who used AI tools occasionally in 2024 may have encountered mostly straightforward cases where the output was correct. With heavier usage in 2025, those same developers encountered the edge cases, hallucinations, and subtle errors that define the boundaries of current AI capabilities.

Implications

For AI tooling vendors, the trust gap represents a product challenge: improving reliability on the hard cases matters more than improving performance on the easy cases, because the hard cases are what drive the perception of untrustworthiness.
