Ubuntu 24.04.4 LTS Ships with Linux 6.17 Kernel
Ubuntu 24.04.4 LTS point release arrived February 12, 2026 with Linux kernel 6.17, Mesa 25.2.7, and Wayland Protocols 1.45, bringing improved hardware support and stability for the current LTS release.
Ubuntu 24.04.4 LTS has been released with the latest Hardware Enablement (HWE) stack, featuring Linux kernel 6.17 and Mesa 25.2.7 graphics drivers. This fourth point release of the Noble Numbat LTS provides improved hardware support for users staying on the stable branch.
What's New in the HWE Stack
Linux kernel 6.17 brings enhanced power management for newer Intel CPUs, SmartMux support for AMD hybrid laptops, and initial RDNA 4 graphics support. The kernel also includes various Framework laptop improvements and improved Wi-Fi 7 stability. Mesa 25.2.7 provides updated GPU driver support across the board, while Wayland Protocols 1.45 adds the latest protocol enhancements for Wayland users.
Support Timeline and Future Updates
While Linux kernel 6.17 reached end of life upstream in December 2025, Canonical's kernel engineering team will continue providing fixes and security updates through December 2026. All Ubuntu 24.04 LTS users can install this newer kernel and GPU driver stack through regular software updates. One final HWE update is planned for August 2026, which will bring the Linux 6.20/7.0 kernel and Mesa stack from Ubuntu 26.04 LTS.
Installation and Availability
The updated ISO images with the HWE stack baked in are now available for download. Existing Ubuntu 24.04 LTS users will receive the update through the standard apt upgrade process. This point release ensures that users installing Ubuntu 24.04 LTS today get the latest hardware support out of the box without requiring additional updates.
